CounterACT Center Director Pamela Lein, PhD

Dr. Pamela Lein is a Professor of Neurotoxicology and Chair of Molecular Biosciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine. She has broad training and experience in molecular and cellular neurobiology, neuropharmacology and neurotoxicology. Her research focuses on defining the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurotoxicology, including how chemical threat agents and therapeutic agents modulate neuroinflammation and neural function. This is Dr. Lein's third CounterACT grant.

CounterACT Center Co-Director Amy Brooks-Kayal, MD, FAAN, FANA, FAES

Dr. Amy Brooks-Kayal is a Professor and Chair of Neurology in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Her research focuses on cellular and molecular pathways in the development of epilepsy following brain injury, with particular emphasis on identifying new therapies for the prevention and treatment of both seizures and cognitive co-morbidities characteristic of acquired epilepsy.

Donald Bruun, BS

Donald Bruun is an Academic Program Management Officer and Lab Manager in the Department of Molecular Biosciences. Donald has focused his research on investigating novel neuroprotectants following acute exposures to organophosphates. Among his many lab skills, he has expertise in histological analyses, microscopic image acquisition, and image analysis of the brain.

Tracey Fernandez

Tracey Fernandez oversees the CounterACT finances, coordinates Center meetings and retreats, sets up seminars and workshops, assists with the preparation of progress reports and budgets, and is the main resource for all Center communications.

Suzette Smiley-Jewell, PhD

Dr. Suzette Smiley-Jewell coordinates the Center's research projects and scientific cores to meet Center milestones, organizes Center educational activities, and helps investigators with their papers and reports. She has a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology and is a Board Certified Editor of the Life Sciences.
