Isaac N. Pessah
Isaac N. Pessah has 30 years experience working in the field of molecular and cellular neuropharmacology and neurotoxicology.
His research has focused on defining the molecular mechanisms by which neuromodulators, neurotoxicants, and natural products influence Ca2+ signaling pathways in excitable cells (muscle and neurons) and how such changes influence normal development, excitability and pathological excitotoxicity.
His interdisciplinary laboratory integrates cutting edge in vivo methods with transgenic and knock-in mice, and in vitro methods including homologous gene expression and knock-down approaches in excitable primary cells, measurement of single channel currents, imaging of global Ca2+ transients and localized Ca2+ events, recording of field excitatory postsynaptic potentials from hippocampal slices, dissociated neurons using multielectrode arrays, and most recently measurements of mitochondrial respiration using Seahorse Flux Analyzer.
His research program has translational implications for understanding gene environment interactions that promote human and animal disorders of the nervous system and interventions to mitigate them.
